Thought for the week

    Keep your tongue

Keep your tongue

Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم says, "Whoever keeps mum will succeed; if any one is ready to give me the guarantee on his tongue I will give him the guarantee of the Heaven".

Uqbath bin Aamir رضي الله عنه asked Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم, oh, Allah's Apostle, what is the real victory? He said , "To keep your tongue"

Mu’aad bin Jabal رضي الله عنه  says: I asked Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم “Oh, Allahs Apostle, will we be punished for what we speak of?” Then He replied: “Only the outcome of what their tongues did surely makes them down in the Hell”.

Hazrath Aboobaker (رضي الله عنه  ) used to keep pebbles inside his mouth in order to prevent it from getting in to unwanted talks.

Abdullah ibnu Mas’ud رضي الله عنه  said; verily there is nothing that should be jailed except my tongue.

Ta’oos said ; my tongue is like wild animals, whenever I release it , that comes and eats me.

Muhammad bin Wasi' said to Malik bin Deenar : “Oh Aboo Yahya , to keep the tongue is more difficult for human beings  than keeping Deenars and Dirhams.

The Almighty Allah says; “He does not utter a single word, but there is a vigilant observer, by him (to record it)” Sura Qaaf 18

This clearly points out the importance of being silent.

Talking is of four kinds. One is mere harming and useless and another is of use and aiming good. Third one is the mixture of these two and the last one is devoid of harm and use.

The dangers of the tongue are innumerable. Talking on unwanted and needless matters is one of the dangerous actions tongue may do. Involving in futile and vain matters and speaking gutturally are also the disadvantages tongue is involved in. Insulting others and cursing are the dangerous things caused by talking.

Calumny or slander by a person may be inspired by many reasons. Either spreading rage between people or getting others help and having tied with them may be the cause of this harmful disease. Attaining self progress by belittling others can also be added to this. The cure for this is to understand the fact that anybody that is doing this shall be laid in to the rage and fury of the Almighty Allah and all his good deeds will be transferred into the account of the victim of his slander. If he has no good deeds in his account the bad deeds done by the victim will be imposed on him. No one who understands this will indulge in such deeds.

The prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم   said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the doomsday should tell good words or let him be silent”.

Silence is of two kinds, Silence of the tongue and silence of the mind. Wise men keep their mind and tongue in silence by avoiding the talking on others and having any bad thought on them in their mind.

Aboobakar al Farisi said: “silence should be practiced not only by the tongue but also by the mind and other body organs”.

Muad bin jabal رضي الله عنه  says: the less you talk with people the more you will be closer to your Lord; when you talk more to Allah your heart will find Him earlier.

So silence is the sign of the real faith. Getting away with all unwanted talks and thoughts is the central part of being a real Muslim. The Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم   said: “A real Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hands the rest of the Muslims have been safeguarded”

Everyone should get practiced to acquire the habit of talking good words and avoiding bad talks and thoughts. Before you start your talk, wait a moment and think what you are going to utter, then make your intention good and speak out.

It is told that the tongue of the wise man is behind his mind and the tongue of the idiotic is ahead his mind.
